Guide for Heart Patients

Medicines - 

1. Take heart medicines exactly as prescribed

2. Don't stop Antiplatelets and other medicines without medical advice.

3. Keep a stock of  medicines  that last till next doctor visit( few days extra) 

 

Diet -

1. Low salt intake especially if you have high blood pressure or heart failure.

2. Choose vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses, nuts, and lean proteins.

3. Reduce fried foods, processed foods, excess sugar, and foods high in saturated or trans fats.

4. In heart failure patients avoid excess oral fluids. 

 

Physical activity -

1. Regular activity is beneficial, but the amount should match your condition.

2. Walking and cardiac rehabilitation are commonly recommended after appropriate medical assessment.

3. Stop exercising and seek medical advice if you develop chest pain, severe breathlessness, dizziness, or fainting.

Lifestyle -

1. Avoid smoking and tobacco.

2. Keep alcohol within your doctor's recommended limits, or avoid it if advised.

3. Maintain a healthy weight and get adequate sleep.

4. Manage blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.

Regular monitoring Keep track of, as appropriate -

1. Blood pressure

2. Pulse/heart rate 

3. Weight

Blood sugar if diabetic

Symptoms such as swelling, breathlessness, or unusual fatigue

.  Seek emergency medical care immediately for new or severe chest pressure/pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, sudden sweating/nausea with chest discomfort, or symptoms suggesting a heart attack .
